Wondering How to Make Friends in Sydney? Let Us Help!

Broaden your horizons (and your social circle) with our guide on how to make friends in Sydney.

Crock'd

Making friends as an adult is notoriously tricky. We're short on time, there are fewer built-in social ops, and everyone is at slightly different life stages. It's not quite a walk in the park. And if you're a sole trader, have a small office or work remotely, it's even more of a challenge. The good news? You're not the only one craving a little convo. There are plenty of people ready and waiting to mingle - you've just got to know where to look. Sydney is heaving with friend-making ops, and we've rounded up a few fun ones to get you started. Read on for our guide on how to make friends in Sydney.

Club Sup

Join a Club

We. Love. A. Club. As they home in on one thing, you've already got something in common with your new pals before you've even opened your mouth. As Sydney siders love to optimise their time, you'll find a club on every corner. If you like to be active, consider one of these run clubs - they welcome everyone from newbies to advanced. There's even a croissant run club!

If you're more one to enjoy the finer things in life, consider a supper club. Club Sup is a great place to meet new faces whilst you wine and dine to your heart's content.

Book worm? Sydney is rife with book clubs full of like-minded folk. Catch our favourites here. Fancy something less structured? Chaotic Social holds a variety of creative classes regularly that you can book as you go.

Urban Rec

Get Physical with Social Sports

Team sport isn't just for the school kiddos. On top of enhancing your fitness levels and positive mental health gains, joining a team is great for making buds. Not to worry if you haven't been much of a sporty type in your youth. On top of your local soccer and netball teams, there are plenty of great options to ease you in. Urban Rec offers social leagues across Sydney. They've got some great (and interesting!) sports including flag gridiron, dodgeball, pickleball, soccer and volleyball. There are even a few Urban Rec love stories out there so if you're after something more than friends, you might find it here, too.

The Dolphin

Find a Local

Sydney's pub scene is thriving and there's a little something for everyone from sports bars to dog-friendly watering holes. Find your spot and maybe even your regular table and you'll be striking up convos with other regulars in no time. Plenty of pubs offer trivia nights as well which is another great op to meet a friendly face. Not a pub person? Same goes for your local coffee shop too!

Harry's Bondi

Head to the Dog Park or a Dog-Friendly Cafe

We've found one of the easiest ways to get chatting with strangers is over a strong mutual interest and no one is more passionate about dogs than other dog owners. Whether you decide to take your pooch to your local dog beach or are just soaking up some sun at your local dog-friendly cafe, chances are you'll engage in some chat with another dog lover. If you're gelling, be sure to arrange a play date for the kids (read: dogs).

Try a New Hobby

Take the pressure out of the whole making friends business with a bit of organised fun. Not only will you be learning a new skill, but you might also make a new friend with interests similar to yours. Extra-curricular adult activities are booming right now so there is plenty to choose from. Try learning a new language, work on your writing, learn how to work with clay or get involved with a specialty art class. Next time work drinks roll around you'll have something non-work related to chat about with your colleagues, too!

Bondi Beach

Attend Local Events

There are so many wonderful, organised people out there arranging local events for like-minded people. Scour your local community Facebook groups as well as the recommended events section. Early morning riser groups, ice baths and meditations are popular but if you're not feeling a 5am wakeup you'll also find dance sessions, musical events and swaps.

We hope this edit has inspired you to get out there and make some friends in Sydney! If you're looking for more things to do with your newfound buds, be sure to scour our monthly guide for current events as well as our edit of the best brunch spots in Sydney
