RANDWICK

GET TO KNOW
THE AREA

Famed for being Sydney’s premier horseracing destination, Randwick is a neighbourhood that likes to mix things up. Putting aside the prestigious natural, medical and educational amenities at its doorstep, Randwick has established its own dining and café scene that sits amidst architecture that speaks to its historic past.

Lifestyle

With 29 km of beach (including Coogee and Maroubra beaches) on one side and the expansive Centennial Park on the other, Randwick is one of the most visited tourist areas outside central Sydney.

Randwick has set itself up to cater to the varying educational and medical institutions within its bounds – prestigious University of New South Wales, Prince of Wales Hospital, The Royal Hospital for Women, Prince Henry Hospital and Sydney Children’s Hospital.

Running through the centre of Randwick is Belmore Street, the main commercial hub that is well equipped with two shopping centres that are surrounded by a mishmash of independent and franchise stores.

Under heritage conservation, The Spot is an entertainment area. The landmark Art Deco building that houses The Ritz cinema remains true to its cinematic and architectural roots, whilst the surrounding cafés, restaurants and bars bring their own level of quirkiness to this vibrant block.

Although it’s serious business for students at the numerous academic institutions, come Spring time and all eyes turn to the Royal Randwick Racecourse where crowds are mesmerised by the speed and agility of thoroughbred horses. In more recent times, Autumn is upping the ante on the horse racing season, drawing crowds to see trainers and jockeys vie for $18 million prize money.

No matter what your interest or purpose, it’s easy to feel at home in this all-embracing neighbourhood.

THE SPOT

The Ritz cinema and surrounding architecture pays homage to a bygone era. By day and night, the cafés, dining and wine bars make this a busy corner block.

ROYAL RANDWICK RACECOURSE

Founded in the 1830s, the Royal Randwick Racecourse is an institution. A weekend destination for races, Royal Randwick has head-turning fashion that gets into full swing during April for The Championships, the Australian Derby, the Doncaster and other group 1 races, then later for the Spring Racing carnival season.

THE RITZ CINEMA

One of two remaining original Art Deco cinemas in Sydney, The Ritz screens the latest releases and independent films. This local gem plays host to its own film festival and has special screenings for the youngest and more mature moviegoers.

FRED HOLLOWS RESERVE

A natural retreat from the bustle of urban life, locals love to get away from it all in this five-acre strip.

CENTENNIAL PARK

Known as the People’s Park, these 189 hectares of expansive green space is one of Sydney’s gems. It’s a place to picnic with family and friends or to get the heart rate pumping by cycling, jogging or horse riding. During the warmer months, you can watch a favourite movie at the Moonlight Cinema held in the park. It also has a learning centre that provides year-round education programs about the environment and sustainability.
