DEE WHY

GET TO KNOW
THE AREA

Life revolves around the beach in this laid-back yet bustling Northern Beaches hotspot. Dee Why blends its multicultural makeup and lively shopping district with the laid-back surfie vibe along popular Dee Why beach – a trait that has long been capturing the attention of Sydneysiders.

Lifestyle

This lively beachside suburb gets going before the sun rises. Locals take advantage of coastal living by hitting the beach, rock pool or the promenade for their morning exercise before the commute to work.

The extended beach area is the pulsing heart of Dee Why. The rolling emerald waves attract surfies who can be seen bobbing in the water year round. The beach also plays host to annual community events, from the festive Australia Day and New Year’s Eve fireworks, to the active Sun Run and the pro surf boat series, Ocean Thunder.

In the warmer months, the sandy shores and the adjoining Ted Jackson Reserve become the focal point as families enjoy a picnic lunch on the grass with the seagulls. The fenced-in playground and long pathways, ideal for bikes and scooters, are perfect for the youngest residents. Across the road, the cluster of alfresco cafés and restaurants that line The Strand offer tables with expansive views where you can while away the hours, day or night.

Head a kilometre inland towards bustling Pittwater Road and you feel worlds away from the beach. A busy bus interchange connects Dee Why to the CBD.

The area’s diversity is highlighted in the variety of Asian and Indian grocery stores that are mixed in with delicatessens and multicultural dining options.

Having a ‘roomie’ is the norm here, with 20-somethings house-sharing and young families taking advantage of the still relatively affordable accommodation.

BEACH

The natural playground of Dee Why Beach stretches across 1.8 kilometres from Long Reef to Dee Why Point. Sydneysiders love to soak up the sun along the sandy shores, swim in the ocean and rock pool, or sit back and watch storms roll in over the Pacific Ocean.

COASTAL WALK

Walk the Dee Why Lagoon to Long Reef Headland trail. This coastal walk forms part of the Bicentennial Coastal Walk that connects Manly to Narrabeen. You can spot dolphins and whales along this trail during migration season.

LAGOON

Situated back from Dee Why Beach is Dee Why Lagoon. Once home to a large number of black swans, the lagoon has been altered dramatically by encroaching urban development. Thanks to a regeneration program, the lagoon is once again a refuge for wildlife and migratory birds. It can be experienced via the walking tracks and open areas surrounding it.

BUSHLAND

Escape into the Australian bushland in the oasis of Stony Range Regional Botanic Garden. Uniquely positioned, this botanic garden features walking tracks as well as picnic and barbeque facilities.

WINE & DINE

Taste the flavours of Afghanistan, the Himalayas, India, Lebanon, Greece, Italy and Australia in the mouth-watering restaurants and eateries scattered throughout Dee Why.
