Sydney was host to a spate of new café openings in 2023. These were the best.

Few things in life surpass the simple pleasure of discovering a delicious new café brimming with tasty morsels and we were lucky enough to uncover a fair few in 2023.  And with variety being the spice of life, we've been sure to include all kinds in this edit from Italian bakeries to sandwich shops, waterside haunts to inner-city gems. Kosta's

Kosta's Roseberry 

Spreading the Kosta's love even further throughout Sydney, these good people have just opened an outpost in the back streets of Roseberry. What's Kosta's about? The simple and delicious joy of a good sandwich - the two-hander, bursting with top-notch fillings kind. The menu shifts regularly but you can expect panko crumbed shnitty sandwiches, Super Deli sandwiches and poached chicken and slaw beauties.

Fabbrica Bread Shop

Fabbrica Bread Shop 

If there is anyone we trust with our daily bread it's going to be our favourite pasta store. Fabbrica Bread Shop is one of the newest kid on Sydney's bakery scene but they're already killing it. Score hot coffee, flaky croissants, pain au chocolat, focaccia and metre-long pizza alongside their ever-popular pasta packs. They are also slinging one-off bakes from fairy bread croissant pudding brûléed, topped with maple syrup and sprinkles, to white chocolate and almond frangipane scrolls. Get in early as they're only open until they sell out - and they sure do!

Oh Boy Café

Sydney's iconic Andrew Boy Charlton Pool has revamped their poolside café and it is looking schmick! 

Overlooking Woolloomooloo Bay, Oh Boy is the ideal spot to while away your springtime weekends. Along with a menu revamp, Oh Boy have introduced a new bottomless brunch offering that is available Friday to Sunday. 

Best of all, for the first time ever, you'll be able to order dishes straight to your sun lounger. Who needs Hawaii?! The incredibly chic interiors help the vibes along, too.

You can expect to dine on breaky classics, and heftier lunch options - think Angus Steak Sandwich and Spaghetti & Cuttlefish Ragu, alongside salads, poke bowls and cheeseburgers.

Sammy's 

Adore the Pittwater? Well, it just got even better. Sammy's is offering exquisite holiday vibes alongside jaffles, bagels, cakes, hot chocolates (made with Belgian chocolate!), Japanese tea and so much more. Perched on the marina and open every day, this cruisey cafe has already cemented itself as a pillar of the community.

Makaveli 

What's better than an Italian-inspired coffee and breaky spot? One that turns into a cosy little bar come the evening! Makaveli is Bondi's newest little nook serving elevated versions of the classics. For breaky, think fresh juices, focaccia, pastries and granola. By night, you'll be treated to seasonal and sharable plates like burrata and fresh broad beans, Kingfish crudo, Bresaola and marinated cherry tomatoes. A curated wine list and perfectly muddled cocktails are available of an evening also.

Ken's Continental 

A European-style deli has just opened its doors in Potts Point and our pastry-loving, cured meats-obsessed hearts are fit to bursting. Founded by Farmhouse and Bones Ramen restaurateur Miachael Mu Sung, Ken's Continental is open seven days a week serving incredible coffee, fresh pastries from Lou Lou's Boulangerie, brunch favourites and all the deli meats you could poke a stick at. 

What's more, we love the approach that Ken's is taking on seasonality and provenance by repurposing products from the group's other restaurants to craft artisan pates and pickles. Swing by for a mortadella, arugula, pickled Turkish chilli and plum relish baguette if you know what's good for you.

Lode

Beloved Surry Hills cafe Lode are extending the love and are now serving up their sweet and savoury baked goods to the people of the CBD. Their super viennoiserie skills are too good to be kept to one location. You can expect layers of goodness in the form of croissants, tarts and scrolls in all kinds of scrummy flavours, alongside a considered selection of Australian savoury pastries. Pop in soon or live to regret it.

Home Croissanterie

This beloved croissanterie finally has a brick-and-mortar store where you can lose yourself in the smell of butter, freshly baked goods and hot, Single O coffee. You simply cannot call yourself a croissant aficionado if you haven't tasted former software engineer Ben's iconic bakes. Be sure to get in early if you fancy sampling their signature potato and sea salt croissant.

The Palms Eatery

The Palms Eatery

The Palms combines the three things we cherish most - good eats, swish homewares and plenty of lush plants. It's the perfect place to while away a few hours with both breakfast and lunch options providing you with fuel to browse. The serene backdrop is ideal for a long lunch with shared plates making up the bulk of the menu. Think Sydney rock oysters, kingfish crudo and woodfired bread with a pepper margarita on the side.

Hearthe

From the creator of Black Star Pastry's famed watermelon cake, Christopher Thé, comes this incredibly unique cakery. Thé's intention in opening Hearthe was to create cakes using traditional Australian flavours and preserving measures - cakes designed specifically designed to withstand our warmer climate. The result is impeccable. Think Geraldton Wax Cheesecake and Paperbark Dacquoise. If you're after something savoury there are plenty of bites on the menu, including handmade pies, that can be enjoyed in the crisp interior of the cafe or al-fresco amongst Stanmore's Douglas Street.

Porcellino

Porcellino

Inner-city workers rejoice! Porcellino has arrived and your morning coffee (plus any breaky, lunch and afternoon snacks you may require) is sorted. Located in the forecourt of Sydney's oldest hospital, you'll be able to take in a slice of history with your morning brew. The menu is nice and light and filled with quality takes on your breakfast and lunch favourites. Next time you're stuck for lunch pop by this little slice of Europe in the heart of Sydney.
