NATURE ACTIVITIES

Ballarat-Skipton Rail Trail

Cycle Along The Ballarat-Skipton Rail Trail

Explore Ballarat on two wheels via the Ballarat-Skipton Rail Trail, an easygoing track that follows the route of an old railway. You’ll pass through native grasslands, historical gold mining sites and the Nimmons Bridge, a 1850s hand built timber trestle bridge that’s a curious insight into engineering history. The whole trail is 53 kilometres, but you can do as much or as little as you like, with history boards sited at various points along the way.

Mount Buninyong

Climb An Extinct Volcano At Mount Buninyong

Clear your lungs by climbing Mount Buninyong, an extinct volcano 20 minutes outside Ballarat. Rising 745 metres above sea level, it offers panoramic views across the region as a reward for conquering either the easy one kilometre Crater Walk, or the more challenging three kilometre Summit Walk (which takes you right to the peak).

Lake Wendouree

Stroll (Or Paddle Or Tram) Around Lake Wendouree

Once upon a time Lake Wendouree was a shallow swamp, before it was dammed during the gold rush and turned into a picturesque lake. These days you can go for a leisurely walk or vintage tram ride around its six kilometre perimeter, ride a paddle steamer across it or even glide along it in a pedal boat. Alternatively, you could simply sit by the lake and observe the many ducks, waterhens and swans that live there.
